3. Permit submission and plan review — the part people worry about. Most Florida jurisdictions of any size now accept solar permit applications through online portals, and review happens in one or more passes. A complete first submission is the difference between one cycle and three.
4. Installation (usually one to three days on the roof). Scheduling depends on the installer’s backlog and, in summer, on Florida weather windows.
5. Inspection. The AHJ inspects the finished work against the approved plans. Most jurisdictions schedule within days; a failed item means a correction and a re-inspection cycle.
6. Utility interconnection and permission to operate (PTO). After the inspection passes, your utility processes the interconnection application, may swap or reprogram the meter, and issues permission to operate. A common worry we can mostly retire: under Florida’s solar-rights law, a homeowners association cannot prohibit you from installing solar on your own roof. HOAs retain limited say over placement, but only to the extent restrictions do not impair the system’s performance. Can I install solar without a permit in Florida? No. Solar installations require building and electrical permits everywhere in the state. Unpermitted work surfaces at resale, in insurance claims, and at utility interconnection — the utility will not grant permission to operate without the passed inspection.
Does the permit cost a lot? Permit fees are set by each jurisdiction and are a small line item in the context of a solar project. Your installer’s quote should include them — ask if it is not explicit.
Who is responsible if the permit is rejected? Your contractor. Review comments are a normal part of the process, and responding to them is the installer’s job, not yours. A rejection is almost never fatal — it is a revision request.
Is the timeline different for a battery or a solar-plus-battery system? The process is the same, with additional electrical review for the energy storage system. Departments have grown accustomed to batteries, but the extra scope can add review depth.
