Here’s an interesting article going in-depth on how utility companies and lobbying firms around the nation are attempting to hinder the progress of roof top solar. Despite their efforts and some success, their overall goals have fallen short of their intended outcome.
The Utilities’ Agenda
The primary objective of these groups is to end or limit net metering. Net metering is a system in which solar panels or other renewable energy generators connect to a public-utility power grid. When surplus energy is sent to the grid through the net meter it is credited to the customer’s account. Net metering allows customers to offset the cost of power drawn from the utility company.Obviously, something utility companies do not like.
The People Fight Back for Solar
Utility companies and lobbying firms plan are usually stopped by local community leaders and educated citizens. These groups of individuals organize, educate and change legislation in their communities. The voice of the people is something utility companies cannot silence.
A perfect example of this was Amendment 1 which appeared last year on Florida November ballot. The Amendment was promoted by a group calling itself Consumers for Smart Solar and was funded heavily by utilities and interest groups. This amendment was designed to sound pro solar but ultimately would have threatened net metering. Luckily for pro solar Floridians, the amendment fell short of its requisite votes.
Florida has a lot of solar energy potential, stay up to date and educated about whats going on in your community. South Miami now passed a bill mandating all new construction have solar panels installed. Progress is happening whether they like it or not.
